Book group met to discuss ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ by Charlotte Perkins Gilman on Monday 22nd April 2013.

This is essentially a short story as opposed to a novel.  The narrative follows a woman’s descent into insanity.  We discussed at length if she was driven to insanity through oppression and stifling of her creativity, or was her distress a chemical imbalance?
We all agreed it was a good read, even if a little disturbing.

We will next meet on Monday 20th May 2013 at 7.30 in The Drum.

We are going to discuss ‘Bitter Lemons of Cyprus’ by Lawrence Durrell.

Members and visitors spent a delightful evening with one of our members, Edna Baber, learning how to make icing flowers ready for our Easter cakes.  Most of us managed a daisy  but  there  were  some  very  beautiful  pinks, daffodils, roses, leaves and snowdrops to be seen.  Edna is a very talented lady and we are very grateful to her for passing on her skill and expertise.

Plans are being made for our Summer Outing.  We are deciding whether to go to Coldharbour Mill in Devon or to Kilver Court Gardens in Shepton Mallet.  The annual event that members arrange for the charity of their choice will be a Silent Auction.  More details will be given when they are available.  The money this year will go to the Air Ambulance.

The speaker at the April meeting will be Gerry Watkins who will talk about greyhound and lurcher rescue.  She will be bringing her dogs with her so is you would like to meet them and Gerry please come along on Wednesday 8th April, 7.30 p.m. in the Village Hall.  You will be very welcome.
